Welcome back to Letters from the Lab, a weekly CozyChemKids™ series where our characters share real chemistry lessons with curious children and the grown-ups who support them.
This week’s letter comes from Benny Beaker.
Dear Little Chemist,
You will probably notice my size first—but do you know why chemists use large beakers like me?
My name is Benny Beaker, and I am a member of the CozyChemKids™ Lab Tool Team.
A real beaker is a wide, open container with a flat bottom and a small pouring spout. Chemists use beakers to hold, mix, and pour liquids.
Beakers come in many different sizes. I am a larger beaker, so I can hold more than my smaller friend, Bella Beaker.
Why Am I Built to Hold More?
The amount a container can hold is called its capacity.
Because I am larger than Bella, I have a greater capacity. That means I can hold more liquid.
But being bigger does not make me the best beaker for every job.
A chemist chooses a beaker based on how much material is needed. A large beaker may be useful when a chemist needs to hold or mix a larger amount. A smaller beaker may be a better choice when only a little is needed.
Choosing the correct size helps chemists work carefully and avoid using more material than necessary.
What Can a Beaker Do?
Beakers help chemists perform several important laboratory jobs:
- Hold liquids and other materials.
- Mix materials together.
- Pour liquids using the small spout.
- Help chemists estimate how much liquid is inside.
The wide opening makes it easier to add and stir materials.
The flat bottom helps the beaker stand steadily on the laboratory table.
Chemists must still handle every beaker carefully, especially when it is made of glass.
Those Lines Are Helpful—but Not Exact
You may notice lines along the side of a beaker. These lines are called markings or graduations.
The markings help a chemist estimate the amount of liquid inside.
An estimate is a careful idea of how much there is, but it is not an exact measurement.
When a chemist needs a more precise liquid measurement, a different tool—such as a graduated cylinder—is usually a better choice.
This is an important laboratory lesson: tools may look similar, but they do not always perform the same job.
A Detail People Sometimes Overlook
Chemists do not choose the largest container every time.
A beaker should be large enough to hold and mix the material without overflowing. It should also be the right size for the amount being used.
Choosing the correct tool helps a chemist observe, mix, and pour more carefully.
Good chemistry begins with choosing the right tool for the job.
Safety First
Children should never handle laboratory chemicals or glassware without a knowledgeable adult.
At home, little chemists can practice comparing capacity with safe, unbreakable containers selected by an adult.
They can look at the containers, predict which one will hold more, and then use water to test their prediction—with an adult’s help.

Which beaker would hold more: the big one or the small one?
Ask your little chemist to explain the answer using the word capacity.
A Note for Parents and Teachers
This question helps children compare sizes and connect the size of a container to its capacity.
It also introduces the idea that chemists choose laboratory tools based on the job they need to perform.
At this age, children do not need to memorize every piece of laboratory equipment. The goal is to understand that laboratory tools have different designs because they perform different jobs.
