Even though we cannot see it by itself, hydrogen helps make things we use and need every day. What Is Hydrogen? Hydrogen is a colorless, odorless gas. That means we cannot see it or smell it. It is the lightest element and the simplest atom. Each hydrogen atom has 1 proton and 1 electron. Hydrogen’s symbol is H, and its atomic number is 1. Where Can You Find It? Hydrogen is all around us. You can find hydrogen: in water in the Sun and stars in plants in your body in many living things on Earth One of the easiest places to think about hydrogen is water. Water is made from hydrogen and oxygen. That is why its formula is H₂O. Where Do We Use It? Hydrogen helps people in many ways. Scientists use hydrogen to: help power rockets create clean energy with fuel cells make important chemicals do scientific research Hydrogen is also part of many things around us, even when we do not notice it. Why Does Hydrogen Matter? Hydrogen matters because life could not exist without it. Hydrogen helps form water. Water helps plants, animals, and people live. Hydrogen also helps power the stars. The Sun uses hydrogen to make the light and warmth we feel on Earth. Amazing Science Fact Most of the Sun is made of hydrogen. Inside the Sun, hydrogen atoms join together in a process called fusion.
