Welcome to Letters from the Lab, a weekly CozyChemKids™ series where our characters share real chemistry lessons with curious children and the grown-ups who support them.

Each Friday, a different member of the CozyChemKids™ team will help little chemists ask questions, observe carefully, and discover how chemistry connects to the world around them.

This week’s letter comes from Sky, a member of the Test Tube Team.

Dear Little Chemist,

You might notice my bright blue color first, but do you know why chemists use test tubes like me?

My name is Sky, and I am part of the CozyChemKids™ Test Tube Team. Real test tubes are narrow containers, often made of glass or plastic, that chemists use to hold small samples.

I may not hold as much as a large beaker, but that is okay. Every laboratory tool has its own special job.

My job begins with something small.

Why Do Chemists Start with Small Samples?

When an investigation allows it, chemists often begin with a small amount of a substance instead of filling a large container.

Using a small sample can help a chemist:

  • Observe a substance more closely.
  • Compare two samples side by side.
  • Notice differences in color, layers, bubbles, or cloudiness.
  • Use only the amount needed.
  • Reduce unnecessary waste.

Starting small gives chemists a chance to look carefully before deciding what to do next.

That is part of being a thoughtful chemist.

Small Samples Make Comparing Easier

Imagine that a chemist has two test tubes sitting next to each other.

One sample is clear. The other looks cloudy.

One sample stays the same. The other begins to form bubbles.

Because the samples are small and placed in similar containers, the chemist can compare them more easily.

Chemists do not simply look at a sample and guess what happened. They observe, compare, record what they notice, and then use evidence to explain their results.

Learning about test tubes for kids can begin with this simple idea: chemists choose a tool because of the job it needs to do.

A Detail People Sometimes Overlook

A smaller amount does not automatically make a substance safe.

Chemists must still follow laboratory rules, use the correct equipment, and handle every substance carefully. Children should never handle laboratory chemicals or glassware without a knowledgeable adult.

At home, little chemists should only participate in age-appropriate chemistry activities that have been selected and supervised by an adult.

Careful chemistry always begins with safety.

Invite your little chemist to explain the choice. You can also ask:

Would you choose a small test tube or a large container? Why?

There is more than one way for children to share their thinking. They can answer with words, point to a picture, or draw the tool they would choose.

A Note for Parents and Teachers

This question helps children practice identifying a laboratory tool and connecting its shape and size to its job. It also introduces careful observation, comparison, and responsible material use.

At this age, the goal is not to memorize a long list of equipment. The goal is to help children understand that chemists choose tools for a reason.
